Over the past year or so I have heard a lot of talk about how Marijuana is good for treating Alzheimers.  It made sense at the time, but unfortunately it seems that those were just stories.

The findings, published in the current issue of the journal Current Alzheimer Research, could lower expectations about the benefits of medical marijuana in combating various cognitive diseases and help redirect future research to more promising therapeutics.

Previous studies using animal models showed that HU210, a synthetic form of the compounds found in marijuana, reduced the toxicity of plaques and promoted the growth of new neurons. Those studies used rats carrying amyloid protein, the toxin that forms plaques in the brains of Alzheimer's victims.

The new study, led by Dr. Weihong Song, Canada Research Chair in Alzheimer's Disease and a professor of psychiatry in the UBC Faculty of Medicine, was the first to test those findings using mice carrying human genetic mutations that cause Alzheimer's disease -- widely considered to be a more accurate model for the disease in humans.

"As scientists, we begin every study hoping to be able to confirm beneficial effects of potential therapies, and we hoped to confirm this for the use of medical marijuana in treating Alzheimer's disease," says Song, a member of the Brain Research Centre at UBC and VCH Research Institute and Director of Townsend Family Laboratories at UBC.

"But we didn't see any benefit at all. Instead, our study pointed to some detrimental effects."

According to a Poll conducted by ABC news, 81% of Americans are in favor of legalizing medical marijuana.  More and more people are beginning to see the benefits in medical marijuana.  In 1997 only 67% of those polled were in favor of legalizing medical marijuana.

What about us casual pot smokers?  What do Americans think of legalizing or at least decriminalizing marijuana completely?  Unfortunately, popular support isn't high enough for this to be a landslide, but it is substantial.

Nationwide, 46% of those polled were in favor of completely decriminalizing marijuana.  Not surprisingly, liberals were more in favor of this than conservatives, and the young were substantially more open to the idea than the old.

Age is a factor. Just 23 percent of senior citizens favor legalizing marijuana for personal use; that jumps to 51 percent of adults under age 65. There are political and ideological differences as well: Thirty percent of conservatives and 32 percent of Republicans favor legalization, compared with 49 percent of independents, 53 percent of Democrats and more than half of moderates and liberals alike (53 and 63 percent, respectively)Source: abcnews.go.com

With medical marijuana on the rise in more states, New Jersey the latest, acceptance is inevitable.  Now that California is about to be the first state to hold a public referendum on completely legalizing marijuana, it seems that legal pot is just around the corner.

According to a Poll conducted by ABC news, 81% of Americans are in favor of legalizing medical marijuana.  More and more people are beginning to see the benefits in medical marijuana.  In 1997 only 67% of those polled were in favor of legalizing medical marijuana.

Unfortunately for Steven Alan Locasio, 48, the ransom note was written by detectives, who arrested Locasio when he showed up with $200 in exchange for the safe return of the pot plants.

According to the Sheriff's Office, a resident called to report that the plants were growing in a wooded lot off of Coco Plum Drive in Marathon. Police found six plants, took them for evidence and left behind the note. Locasio called the number to arrange the exchange.

He handed detectives the cash and they arrested him, the Sheriff's Office said. A search of his apartment turned up 20 more marijuana plants, several Oxycontin pills and $1,380 in cash.

Locasio and his wife, Christine Locasio, 50, were both charged with cultivation of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia and sale of marijuana.

The University of Pittsburgh has too much money in their coffers, I think it is time to share the wealth.  Their latest research project has proven the illusive "Does music encourage pot use?" conundrum.  In a shocking revelation, it looks like it does.

So boys and girls, before listening to that snoopy dog or that ludicrous rap music, ask yourself if you want to be a pothead too.

Teens who frequently listen to music that contains references to marijuana are more likely to use the drug than their counterparts with less exposure to such lyrics, according to a University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine study online now in the journal Addiction.Source: www.sciencedaily.com

"Based on an analysis of survey data from 959 ninth-graders, we found that students who listen to music with the most references to marijuana are almost twice as likely to have used the drug than their peers whose musical tastes favor songs less focused on substance use, even after controlling for confounding factors," said Brian Primack, M.D.,Ed.M., M.S., lead author of the study and assistant professor of medicine and pediatrics at Pitt's School of Medicine.

"Interestingly, we also found that exposure to marijuana in music was not associated with other high-risk behaviors, such as excessive alcohol consumption. This suggests that there is a real link between the marijuana lyrics and marijuana use," said Dr. Primack.

I wonder why that can be?  Possibly because alcohol is commonly accepted and marijuana is considered taboo.  If you remove the taboo, the kids will be less likely to try it and treat it just like alcohol.  I take it rocket science wasn't your minor.

This research seems to have a flaw in it.  It directly correlates music to marijuana, while ignoring the fact that those who smoke marijuana may seek out music with references to it.  This is something that is very true, especially in my case.  The research concentrates on Ninth Graders, but even at this age I had at least tried marijuana and would gladly smoke if I could find it.  After I started smoking, personally I enjoyed Cypress Hill for their references and searched for more music in that genre.

The proposal would legalize possession of up to one ounce of marijuana for adults 21 and older. Residents could cultivate marijuana gardens up to 25 square feet. City and county governments would determine whether to permit and tax marijuana sales within their boundaries.
